Procedure for NRIs to apply new AADHAAR enrolment registration is made quick, hassle free and user friendly by UIDAI so the NRIs can apply for new AADHAAR enrolment efficiently. NRI applicant must hold a valid Indian Passport as Proof of Identity document to apply for AADHAAR. For NRIs, Email ID is mandatory in the AADHAAR enrolment form. The declaration section in the AADHAAR enrolment form is slightly different for NRI enrolment; NRI applicant must read and sign the same in the AADHAAR enrolment form. At the AADHAAR enrolment registration centre, the NRI applicant must specifically ask the AADHAAR enrolment operator to enrol him / her as NRI.

Earlier, after arriving in India, NRIs had to wait for 182 days and so their status change from Non-Resident Indian (NRI) to resident and only then they could apply for AADHAAR enrolment. However in May 2020, the Finance Minister of India proposed that NRIs with valid Indian Passport may apply for AADHAAR on arrival and need not wait for 182 days for their status to change to resident.

To apply for a new AADHAAR enrolment registration visit a nearby AADHAAR enrolment centre with the required supporting documents of each NRI applicant who wish to apply for a new AADHAAR. At the AADHAAR enrolment centre, each NRI applicant has to fill a separate AADHAAR enrolment form with requested details. In the AADHAAR enrolment form, the NRI applicant can only write his / her local Indian mobile phone number, international / non-Indian mobile numbers are not supported. The NRI applicant has to provide his / her local Indian address; international / non-Indian addresses are not supported. Once the filled up form and the supporting documents are in order, each NRI applicant's biometric (iris scan, fingerprints scan and photograph) and demographic data will be captured electronically and sent to the central data processing servers. For NRI kids below 5 years age only facial photograph will be taken; iris scan and fingerprints scan will not be captured. These NRI children will need to update their biometrics of iris scan, fingerprints scan and facial photograph, when they turn 5 and 15. Intimation to this effect will be mentioned in the original AADHAAR letter.

NRI AADHAAR Enrolment Acknowledgement

In the end, the NRI applicant will be given an acknowledgement slip containing a unique Enrolment ID and Date & Time Stamp. Please keep this AADHAAR enrolment acknowledgement slip securely as it will be required to check AADHAAR enrolment status, collect the approved AADHAAR sent via India Post as well as to download e-AADHAAR online. Verify the data in the AADHAAR enrolment acknowledgement slip carefully to make sure all the data are captured correctly. Individuals can enrol for AADHAAR only once, any attempt to enrol multiple times will be rejected by the process of de-duplication using their demographic and biometric information. AADHAAR approval process may take anywhere from 60 to 90 days after successful enrolment registration. Once it's ready, AADHAAR will be delivered by the India Post on the given Indian address.

AADHAAR enrolment is free of cost for everyone including NRIs, there is no fees / charges of any kind for new enrolment. NRI AADHAAR Enrolment Documents

Each NRI applicant must carry the supporting documents for new AADHAAR application in original; no Xerox copies of the documents are required. Proof of Identity and Proof of Address documents are generally needed to apply for new AADHAAR enrolment. All NRI applicants must hold a valid Indian Passport as Proof of Identity document to apply for AADHAAR. Click here for the list of documents for AADHAAR enrolment. In case Proof of Address is not available Certificate of Address, having photo, issued by MP or MLA/Gazetted Officer / Tehsildar on letterhead or by Village Panchayat head or its equivalent authority (for rural areas) is accepted as valid Proof of Address. Based on the document availability situation there are mainly 2 approaches for NRI new AADHAAR enrolment registration.

  1. Documents available for all NRI applicants:
    Each NRI applicant has their own Proof of Identity and Proof of Address documents. Each NRI applicant carries the originals of their Proof of Identity and Proof of Address documents with them to the AADHAAR enrolment centre.
  2. Documents available only for the NRI Head of Family:
    Only the NRI Head of Family has his / her Proof of Address document. Indian Passport as Proof of Identity is a must for each NRI applicant to apply for AADHAAR, regardless of their age. NRI Head of Family carries the originals of his / her Proof of Identity and Proof of Address documents with him / her to the AADHAAR enrolment centre. The other NRI applicants in the family carry their Passport as Proof of Identity and the Proof of Relationship documents, which establishes their relationship with the NRI Head of Family. The NRI Head of Family will enrol for new AADHAAR first and obtain the AADHAAR enrolment acknowledgement slip containing a unique Enrolment ID and Date & Time Stamp. Using this AADHAAR enrolment acknowledgement slip, the NRI Head of Family can then introduce other NRI members of the family for new AADHAAR enrolment using their respective Proof of Relationship document.
