AADHAAR Name Update Online

Procedure to change / correct name in AADHAAR is made quick, hassle free and user friendly by UIDAI. Name change is a very rarely requested update in AADHAAR only when there is either some minor mistake in the name on AADHAAR or when there is a change in name due to life events such as marriage / divorce. Applicant can request change / correction of name online on UIDAI's Self Service Update Portal without having to physically go to AADHAAR enrolment / update centre. Online, applicant can request name change / correction in AADHAAR only twice in his / her life time. If name change / correction is needed more than twice, the applicant will have to physically go to AADHAAR enrolment / update centre with supporting Proof of Identity document. Applicant will be required to upload colored scanned copy of the original Proof of Identity document as per the valid documents list. Click here for the list of documents for AADHAAR update. A valid working mobile number must be linked to AADHAAR to change / correct name in AADHAAR online. If the applicant did not mention his / her mobile number at the time of AADHAAR enrolment or did not link it later at AADHAAR enrolment / update centre, click here to link mobile number to AADHAAR.

Only following minor changes for name in AADHAAR are allowed online:

Spelling corrections in name, e.g. Sanjiv to Sanjeev.
Sequence change (example: Mohan Pankaj Patel to Pankaj Mohan Patel)
Inclusion of space between name parts (example: Pankajmohan Patel to Pankaj Mohan Patel)
Short form to full form (example: PM Patel to Pankaj Mohan Patel)
Change of surname after marriage (example: Priya Pankaj Nair to Priya Mohan Patel)

For any other change / correction in name in AADHAAR, the applicant will have to physically go to AADHAAR enrolment / update centre with supporting Proof of Identity document.

Applicant can also request change / correction of name offline by visiting a nearby AADHAAR enrolment / update centre with the original supporting Proof of Identity document along with the AADHAAR and authenticate using his / her biometrics. Click here for the list of AADHAAR centres near you.

Applicant will be charged Rs. 50 to change / correct name in AADHAAR. This name change processing fees is non-refundable.

If there are any mistakes in name when applying for a new AADHAAR, correction can be done free of cost within 96 hours of enrolment registration. For correction in name, visit the AADHAAR enrolment registration centre with the AADHAAR enrolment acknowledgement slip with the original supporting Proof of Identity document.

To change / update / correct name in AADHAAR online follow these steps:

Click on the "Login" button in the myAadhaar welcome screen.

myAadhaar login using AADHAAR; get OTP.

Enter the applicant's 12 digit "AADHAAR Number". If the applicant has lost / forgotten his / her AADHAAR Number, click here to retrieve lost / forgotten AADHAAR Number.
Enter the Captcha Verification code exactly as is shown in the auto-generated image on the screen. If the auto-generated Captcha Verification code is not readable, press the refresh icon to generate a new Captcha Verification code.
Click on the "Send OTP" button; this will send an OTP (One Time Password) to the applicant's registered mobile number.

Enter the OTP received on the registered mobile number and click on the "Login" button.

Upon successful login, "Services" page is shown with available online AADHAAR services. Click on the "Update Aadhaar Online" service button.

Name change / correction in AADHAAR online.

On the "How it Works?" page, carefully read the instructions on what information can be updated online in AADHAAR and how to update them and click on the "Proceed To Update Aadhaar" button.

Name change / correction in AADHAAR online; select option.

Click and select "Name" option from the available data field(s) that can be updated in AADHAAR online and click on the "Proceed To Update Aadhaar" button.

Name change / correction in AADHAAR online; enter details.

First section displays the current name details; in the second section fill the new name details in English as well as in local language. If needed, click here to change local language in AADHAAR.
Enter "New Name" in English as well as in local language.
Select either "Manual Upload" or "DigiLocker" option, depending upon from where the supporting name change Proof of Identity document will be submitted from.
Select the supporting Proof of Identity document from the "Select Valid Supporting Document Type" dropdown list and click on the "View Details & Upload Document" button. and the click on the "Next" button.

Once supporting Proof of Identity document for name update is uploaded successfully, confirm the entered name change details in the Preview screen and proceed to make name change processing fees payment.
Upon successful online name change request submission, a URN (Update Request Number) (such as "1234/12345/12345") will be displayed on the screen and also sent via SMS to the applicant's registered mobile number. Save this URN (Update Request Number) securely as it will be required to check AADHAAR update status online. Click here to check name change / correction in AADHAAR status online.

Cancel AADHAAR Name Update Online

Name change / correction in AADHAAR online; cancel request.

Applicant can cancel the name change request from the "My self-service Request" section in the myAadhaar welcome screen dashboard if the change request is not already picked up for further processing. If cancelled, the fees paid will be refunded back to the applicant's account within 21 days.
